Detailed 7 Days Rwanda and Serengeti Wildlife Safari itinerary

Day 1: Arrive at Kigali International Airport and transfer to Kigali city.

Arrive at Kigali International Airport in Rwanda, where your safari guide will meet and welcome you to the country. You will then be transferred to your booked hotel in Kigali for an overnight stay.

Enjoy dinner and spend the night at the hotel in Kigali.

Day 2: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park.

After breakfast at your hotel, embark on a city tour of Kigali. Visit key sites such as the Genocide Memorial Museum, local craft markets, and the Presidential Palace Museum. This tour provides a deeper understanding of the events that took place during the Rwanda Genocide 30 years ago. Lunch will be served at an upscale restaurant in Kigali. After lunch and the city tour, drive north to Volcanoes National Park (Parc National des Volcans) in Rwanda’s Northern Province. The journey covers approximately 200 km and takes about 3 hours on smooth tarmac roads.

Upon arrival at Volcanoes National Park, proceed to your booked safari lodge. Check in and spend the rest of the day relaxing at the lodge, preparing for your upcoming gorilla trekking adventure.

Day 3: Gorilla trekking and Kinyarwanda cultural encounter

After breakfast, your guide will take you to the park headquarters to join other visitors for gorilla trekking. Before starting, you will attend a briefing session covering gorilla trekking tips, forest safety, trekking guidelines, and rules to follow while observing the gorillas. After the briefing, visitors are divided into groups of eight, with each group assigned a specific gorilla family to track.

Follow your ranger guide into the forest on the trek, which can vary in duration depending on the gorillas’ location. Once you locate the mountain gorillas, you will spend one hour observing them in their natural habitat, watching their daily activities such as playing, mating, and grooming their young. There will be plenty of opportunities to take photos and videos. After the trek, return to the starting point, where your guide will transfer you back to the lodge. In the afternoon, after lunch, visit local communities to experience Kinyarwanda culture, including traditional music and meals.

Day 4: Return to Kigali and fly to Tanzania.

Transfer back to Kigali International Airport after breakfast and immediately board a plane to Tanzania where you’ll be enjoying the rest of your adventures on this tour. You will land at Kilimanjaro International Airport from where you’ll be met by out Tanzania representatives, ready to transfer you to your booked hotel for a leisurely evening and dinner.

Day 5: Transfer to Serengeti National Park

After breakfast at the hotel, begin the long journey to Serengeti National Park, carrying a packed lunch. Along the way, enjoy the scenic landscapes of Tanzania. Arrive in the Serengeti in time for lunch, then check in at your booked lodge and enjoy your meal.

In the afternoon, embark on your first Serengeti adventure with an evening game drive across the vast plains. Serengeti National Park is renowned for its abundant wildlife, offering excellent opportunities to see iconic species such as lions, leopards, rhinos, buffaloes, elephants, giraffes, hyenas, cheetahs, zebras, and a variety of birdlife. Explore different areas of the park, taking in both the wildlife and the stunning savanna scenery. After the game drive, return to the lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

Today’s safari will follow the migration routes, offering chances to see the massive herds of wildebeest. The migration also attracts predators such as lions, leopards, cheetahs, and hyenas. Top areas for viewing the wildebeest migration include the famous Seronera Valley in central Serengeti. Lunch will be served at a picnic site within the park before continuing your afternoon safari adventure. After a day of wildlife exploration, return to the lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.
